Industry Insights

Everything you need to know about architectural plaster, specialty finishes, and what to expect when working with a premium applicator.

Venetian plaster is a hand-applied, multi-coat finish made from marble dust and lime putty — a technique perfected in Renaissance Italy. Unlike flat paint, which sits on the surface in a single layer, Venetian plaster is built up in two to four translucent coats and burnished with a steel trowel to create a luminous, three-dimensional depth that mimics polished marble. The result is a surface that reflects light differently at every angle and develops a rich, warm patina over time. Standard drywall compound or latex paint cannot replicate this optical quality. Venetian plaster is also naturally breathable, resistant to mold, and — when properly sealed — highly durable. It is an investment in a surface that improves with age rather than degrading like a painted wall.
Timeline varies significantly by finish type, surface area, and site conditions. A single accent wall in Venetian plaster typically takes two to three days — one day for surface preparation and base coats, and one to two additional days for finish coats and burnishing. A full room can take four to seven days. Microcement requires even more careful staging: the substrate must be primed, a minimum of two base coats applied, and then the finish coat sealed with two to three coats of protective sealer, each requiring curing time between applications. For larger projects — complete home interiors, commercial lobbies, or multi-room estates — timelines of two to six weeks are common. We always provide a detailed project schedule during the consultation phase so clients can plan accordingly.
Yes — with the right finish and proper sealing, many specialty finishes perform exceptionally well in wet environments. Microcement is one of the most popular choices for shower enclosures, bathroom walls, and floors because it can be applied continuously over existing tiles or substrates and, once sealed with a high-quality polyurethane or epoxy topcoat, becomes fully waterproof. Venetian plaster and polished lime plaster can also be used in bathrooms, though they require a wax or resin sealer and careful maintenance. We do not recommend unsealed lime-based plasters in direct-contact wet zones such as shower walls, but they perform beautifully in powder rooms and around vanities. We always assess the specific conditions of a space — humidity levels, ventilation, substrate type — before recommending a finish for wet applications.
Specialty finishes are more durable than most people expect, but they do require mindful care. For Venetian plaster walls, we recommend cleaning with a soft, barely damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner — never abrasive sponges or harsh chemical sprays, which can dull the burnished surface. Waxed Venetian plaster benefits from a fresh coat of Carnauba or specialty plaster wax every one to two years to maintain its sheen and water resistance. Microcement surfaces should be cleaned with a damp mop and a mild, soap-free cleaner. Avoid acidic products such as vinegar-based cleaners, as they can break down the sealer over time. We provide every client with a tailored care guide specific to their finish type and sealer system, and we are always available for touch-up and maintenance visits should a surface ever be damaged.
Architectural plastering is a highly skilled trade — the quality gap between an experienced specialist and a general painter attempting these finishes is dramatic. When evaluating a contractor, ask to see an in-person portfolio of completed work rather than relying on photos alone; subtle texture and depth rarely photograph accurately. Request physical sample boards in the finishes you are considering, applied by the craftsman who will work on your project. Verify that the contractor has specific experience with your chosen finish — Venetian plaster, microcement, and stucco each require distinct training and tooling. Ask about the materials they specify: premium lime plasters, authentic Marmorino, and professional-grade microcement systems differ enormously from budget alternatives. Finally, look for a contractor who involves you in a consultation process and takes time to understand your space before recommending a finish — great plaster work begins long before the trowel touches the wall.
